In our continuing series, we’re showcasing a handbag brand that was inspired by island life in Italy, but was made for the big city.
It was the B.B. Bag which kicked Meli Melo off in 2005. Having grown up on Lipari, founder Melissa Del Bono, was inspired by the small Sicilian island’s traditional wicker baskets. Almost immediately, the bag was spotted on celebs and beloved by royalty (at least two princesses have been photographed with their respective Meli Melo’s). Then in 2012, the B.B. evolved into the iconic Thela, the brand’s most recognizable line. Made from Italian leather, with its slouchy trapeze shape and inverted handles, the bag comes in three sizes and can be worn in five different ways.
In 2013, Meli Melo opened its flagship store in London’s Notting Hill, and since then, they have launched new collections annually. We happen to love the Art Bag, which was created in collaboration with renowned art collector Federica Fanari, and which launched in 2016. In the latest iteration of the bag (the AW18 Collection), it has been re-imagined by Berlin-based artist Olivia Steele. The collaboration features strong graphics paired with a monochromatic box-bag that’s modern and statement-making, both literally and figuratively!
One of the brand’s newest releases is the Nancy. Replete with a box top, the bag’s cylindrical shape reminds you of a bucket bag, but its oval shape actually conforms better to the body. Carry it over the shoulder, by its handle or wear it crossbody; we’re looking forward to more colors very soon!
And if it’s a new backpack you’re looking for, the Briony perfectly fits the bill. In smooth leather, its clever design – with a handle as well as a knotted tubular strap – means it can be worn four ways: by its handle, as a backpack, over the shoulder or by its side handle.
