What Retail
Apocalypse?

Traditional retail is dead? Seems like those reports are widely overblown in The Big Apple.

In March, the city saw the opening of the whopping $2B, 1,000,000-square-foot, super luxury Hudson Yards, with over 100 shops and counting. Meanwhile, this month, New York just got its very first outlet mall, Empire Outlets. Just hop on the Staten Island Ferry (which is free, to boot!), and 20 minutes later, you’ve arrived to shop and eat your way around the 340,000-square-foot mall.

There, you’ll find the usual outlet suspects including Nike and Nordstrom Rack, but there are also waterfront restaurants (like Mamoun’s and Shake Shack). Events are on the way too, including musical performances, petting zoos, virtual golf and fashion shows. We’re keeping an eye on this one to see whether much beloved Woodbury Common, which opened in 1985, cares at all about the new kid on the block.
